That musty, sour smell from an aircon comes from bacteria, mould and damp dirt living on the cooling coils and inside the unit. The fan blows air across all of it, so the smell ends up in the room. Why the aircon smells
An aircon is dark, damp and full of trapped dust, which is exactly what mould and bacteria like. As they build up on the coils and in the drain pan, they give off the musty or sour smell you notice when the unit switches on. The longer it goes unwashed, the stronger the smell gets, and the harder the unit has to work.
How we fix it
A non-dismantle chemical wash is the usual fix. We clean the unit on the wall to clear the dirt, mould and the bacteria behind the smell, and it kills 99.9% of bacteria. It takes 45 to 60 minutes per unit and starts from $80 to $100 for a wall-mounted split unit, $120 to $150 for a ceiling cassette unit. If the unit is heavily soiled or the smell keeps coming back, a full chemical overhaul goes deeper: we dismantle the unit completely, soak the parts and reassemble it, 90 to 120 minutes per unit, from $130 to $180 for a split unit and $180 to $250 for a cassette unit.
